Day 3 - Jews in the Age of Haskalah, Emancipation and Nationalism

8:30 - 9:30 From the MaHaRal to Kafka or How did the largest and most important Jewish community of Europe in the 18th Century become an assimilated community in the 19th Century? This is a lecture using texts dealing with the process of modernization and emancipation of Czech Jews.

9:30 - 13:00 Bus tour to Smichov and explanation on the role of Jews in the Czech industrial revolution. Continue to other parts of the city where Jews lived in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visit Ziskov Cemetery where Yehezkel Landau is buried ,and Olshanska cemetery where Kafka rests.

13:00 - 14:00 Lunch

14:00 - 16:00 Tour of Kafka's Prague :Understanding the Jewish identity of Franz Kafka through different stations in his life. These stations are all in the Old Town. We shall use Kafka texts that can be dramatized if participants wish to take part.

16:00 - 17:00 Summing up discussion: Czech Jews on the brink of the 20th Century- the loss of Jewish identity.

18:00 - 19:30 Dinner
That evening can be free for participants to go to musical or theater performances. They can also go as a group to Black Theater or Laterna Magica which are big tourist attractions, or concerts of all sorts, including Jewish music Alternatively, we can have a program at the Center of Eucation where we can meet with local Jewish teachers ( there is only a small school) or with a Jewish author who will talk about the contribution of Jews to Czech culture.
