Background | Tentative itinerary for an 11-day trip

Day I: Arrive in Paris in the morning. From 10AM to 4 PM a general tour of Paris by bus with a stop over for lunch.

Day II: Start in the morning from Hotel des Invalides - Napoleon's Tomb, where we deal with emancipation of the Jews, then walk over to the Ecole Militaire near by where Alfred Dreyfus was publicly demoted in a humiliating ceremony witnessed by Herzel. From there to Place Vendome where in a near by hotel Herzel wrote his Jewish State.. Then to the Main Synagogue at rue Victoire and the nearby Rothschild Bank. Proceed to the Jewish Quarter the so called Pletzel then visit the Jewish Museum at rue Temple.

Day III: This morning will be dedicated to the Holocaust. At the Holocaust memorial at the Winter Stadium explain the special characteristics of the Holocaust in France, then the differences between Vichy in the South and Paris on the North. Then travel to Drancy about half an hour outside Paris (depending on traffic). In the afternoon visit the cemetery at Monmarter where Emil Zola has a memorial, Heinrich Heine is buried and there areinteresting tombstones of some well Known Jewish families. Dinner and evening visit to Monmarter one of the most scenic and picturesque neighborhoods of Paris. As we stroll we shall discuss the so called Montparnasse Circle which was chiefly made of Jewish artists from Central and Eastern Europe who had come to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century - Chagall, Sutin, Modigliani. Jacques Lipchitz and many others. We will begin a theme that we shall follow later -Jews and Art.

Day IV: Travel to Normandy to visit cites of Allied landing in WWII and
also some ruins of ancient synagogues.

Day V: Take the fast train to Marselles and proceed to any place in the Riviera to spend Shabbat - at either Nice, Cannes , Saint Tropez or Saint Raphael.

Day VI Shabbat: Take it easy at the beach, tour and study. If we spend shabbat in Nice we will deal with the rescue of Jews, including some famous artists, by the Italians who dominated the area in WWII.

Day VII: Visit St. Paul de Vence a picturesque little town where Marc Chagalle is buried and also famous art museum Fundation Maeght which is very famous. It will give us a chance to deal with the subject of Jewish involvement in art - especially art criticism , collecting and art dealing. We wil be able to visit one of the places mentioned above on the Riviera - like Cannes, famous for the film festival, then go to Provence and spend the night in Avignon.

Day VIII: Spend the morning in Avignon. Visit the Synagogue and meet with the Rabbi. In the afternoon proceed to Carpantras then Beux de Feilles and possibly Cavaillon.(all places with Jewish history).Spend the night in Avignon.

Day IX: Continue to visit Provence including Jewish and non Jewish sites like- St. Ramy, Arles and Baux de Provence. Spend the night on either Marselles or Aux en Provence

Day X: Visit Marselles and possibly Montpellier including meet with the Jewish communities.
